City of MELBOURNE

Melbourne hosts over a million international visitors each year, and each day over 771,000 people use the place.  Melbourne is the capital and the most populous city in the state of Victoria and the second most populous in Australia. It is located on the large natural bay known as Port Phillip, with the city centre positioned at the estuary of the Yarra River. The city of Melbourne is made up of the City Centre and a number of inner-city suburbs. The city is often referred to as the “Cultural Capital of Australia”

Climate

Melbourne has a mild, temperate climate. It has an average temperature of 25.5°C during summer which sometimes exceeds 40°C, falling to 20°C in autumn,  approximately 14°C during winters which can fall below 4°C and generally cloudy in spring although it begins to warm up by the end of the month. Melbourne is pleasant and at its best during Autumn

The Place

To start with the place, one can go on the city circle tram which takes a tour around the city. To get a better view of the city, one must visit Federation Square, Queen Victoria market, Crown Casino, Southbank, Great ocean road, Yarra valley, Melbourne zoo, Melbourne Aquarium, Phillip Island Penguin Parade and Sovereign hill. Art patrons must check out, Australian centre for the moving image, Dromkeen collection art gallery, footscray community arts centre, Geelong gallery, Heide museum of modern art, Monash gallery of art, montsalvat, walk to art and the William ricketts sanctuary .

Also, horseracing, gourmet dining, shopping and the cycling paths are the other attractions of the city. At Mordialloc and Beaumaris, 25 and 20 km from Melbourne respectively, one can hit the beaches with various other attractions and activities

Airport

Melbourne airport, also known as Tullamarine Airport, is the primary airport serving the city of Melbourne and the second busiest in Australia. At the airport, 6 car rental sites are available on site, AVIS, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Thrifty and Redspot. Also, Taxis are available from the ground floor level of Melbourne Airport, outside Terminal 2 (T2 – International) and both domestic terminals (Terminal 1 – T1 and Terminal 3 – T3). Expect a taxi fare of around an$80 to an$85 for a return trip between the CBD and Melbourne Airport.

Avalon Airport is Australia’s only dedicated low cost airport is located 40 minutes from the Melbourne CBD. This one is to cater those who cannot afford to spend much on travel expenses.

Transport

Trams are the main form of transport throughout the Central Business District and run up and down most main streets. Trains are the main mode of transport throughout the greater Melbourne area.
